I've just got a new domain for my website you can find me now at www.rosewoodworkusa.com this is very exiting since I've been wanting to have a domain for this site. I have allot of work to do when it comes to changing logos , business cards, stickers and social media but is all good.
Rose Wood Work has a true meaning to me now more than ever, I feel a connection with my father that use to be in the wood industry as a provider in South America in the early 80's and 90's and for some reason the more the years pass the more I resemble and look like him and now I know he was truly my father. He was not a creator but he had lots of ideas and love to work with wood when he was able in his free time to get a hammer, sanding paper and some paint. He past away in 2002 and that was the last time I saw him. My interest for wood has been there all the time, is just that I didn't have tools to create and parents never let me use a power tool way back in the days when I was younger. Now that I have some of these tools, I got some knowledge and lots of safety I can't believe what I can do and is certainly showing. With this thought, all I want to say is that I miss him, despite all of what we went through and all he stood for and believed. He is the only one who really care for me and all I do now as a wood worker is in his honor. No one will ever tell me again that I'm not his daughter and I'll always be your Little Viking...

Well is that time of the year that is getting near to winter, so I wanted to make some fall decorations. I've follow a Doug Linker's Tutorial on YouTube to make a scarecrow. This little guy was very fun to do, I'm enjoying very much the carving makes me feel very at peace and good. I've use again Butternut wood, this time being very careful with the cuts since is a small figure. Using my Flexcut knife I went away and started carving. Then the fun part was painting, as usual with my craft acrylics! Next wood carving project for fall will be a pumpkin, can't wait! I've got an apron for the work shop, it was highly need it since I get all cover in wood dust sometimes. So it was obvious I've need it space to hang it while I wasn't around my work space. Looking around for a nice small piece of pine I've created a hanger for the apron. The process was easy, I've stained the wood with weathered gray and wait for to get the paint dry, then with sanded paper I've distress the wood. Once that was done the wood was ready for some Shellac, for protection. I've put together the hardware and is done, I’ve got a hanger for my wood work apron! It was a great little project, sometimes you have to improvise and usually these are those little projects that stand out and makes your life more easier. One of my favorite wood carvers is Doug Linker on YouTube he was the one who inspire me to learn how to carve wood, so I've went to venture my self and carve a Native in a Blanket which is one of Doug's tutorials. I've carve the Native in Blanket in some hard Balsa Wood, I have no idea what kind of wood this is since I bought it again in one of the big box stores and is different from the last wood I've use. The thing with this wood is that once you start carving you get polished cuts but is very rough on the knifes. I've enjoy every minute of it, seeing how it came out makes me want to make more. The painting was fun, I usually use craft acrylics they are easy to apply and have bright colors. I've also make it antique with an antiquing medium and it looks great. Nevertheless this was an super fun experience. Starting another little neat wood carving project a Civil War Soldier Bust, following a tutorial by @coates6001 on YouTube. I have been taking time to carve more and more every day. In this particular case I'm using a new wood that I haven't use before that I've gotten from one of the big box stores. This wood is Juglans cinerea, commonly known as butternut or white walnut, is a species of walnut native to the eastern United States and southeast Canada. Is very light and grainy though, but cuts like butter. It's a little challenging working with this wood cause is so soft, you've got to be careful when cutting your figure. This is how my civil war soldier bust came out, I think I’m improving a little when it comes to shape and detail so much fun and relaxing. I did this in a evening drinking a nice warm coffee by my side there is nothing like home with a good vibe. Carving Knifes are very sharp, always be very careful handling these tools cause the last thing you want to do is end up in the emergency room and stitches on your fingers. So being careful on how you store your carving knifes could be a challenge, weather is on the go or at your work bench is always good to hide the blade.
Since I like to carry my knifes some times from room to room around the house or even when I go out sometimes in my back pack, I like to protect them with a small leather protector. So I've been currently working on making some of theses little jackets with good leather and wax threat, it works beautifully not only is hiding the carving knife blade to protect you they also look nice. Always make sure to be cautious are all times and keep on carving :) I've been lost in action for a while, but 2020 hasn't been an easy year for anyone I hope that you are safe and well. I'm currently working in Wood Carving projects cause it helps me relax and not think about anything at all but what I'm creating with my hands and a carving knife. I've try this last year, carving a funny little Hilly Billy (Hill Billy you know what I mean, I just like to call them Hilly Billy) and a Skinny Bear which I love and they are part of my decoration at home, I've got hooked watching a YouTube video by Doug Linker who loves to wood carve, canoe and bush-craft in the forest. I love the concept and I want to do the bush-craft one day. But for now I'm just relaxing around the house and spending time outside wood carving while I drink a coffee. I've just finished my 3rd character a "Native with a Blanket" following a Doug's Tutorial, so fun! All I've got to do now is paint it. Well hopefully I will be more active around here and keep you post it with some of my projects and videos. It's been a while since I've been wanting to make a change of the logo and the look of the website. So I've finally made it happened, I've got a new logo for Rose Wood Work and I've change the background to make similar to what I have on my YouTube Channel. Now I have to change everything over at YouTube and my other social media so everything kind of like looks the same.
The story behind it is very simple, this beautiful animal the Deer or Buck lives in the forest always surrounded by trees that are of course wood of different species. The magical part of the story is that when ever I'm in an environment like a forest up North in Georgia, USA where I reside a Deer is always nearby which makes it a very special moment for me. Wood has been part of my life and has been in something that I've always wanted to craft with. Since 2016 I've made it happened and I discover that that I have a talent, so for me is an amazing journey. Branding is important so this was a step up to make things better for my social media and networking. Please leave comments, I'm open to new suggestions. I hope you like it! The Titebond Glue Caddy took me forever to finish, not because it was a difficult project is because I work full time and of top of that I'm a little sick. But I finally did complete the project, this was an easy thing to do do and fun, it will keep my glues with the flow all the time cause the are upside down. Titebond is my glue of choice but sometimes I use Gorilla Glue as well, I like to try other products. This was a scroll saw project and I've found a free pattern from Steve Good at Scrollsaw Workshop website. Well I've finally gave up on my old scroll saw and upgrade to a new Harbor Freight Scroll saw, WOW guys the difference is from day to night. I'm so glad to have made the decision to get a better saw than what I had and I'm not disappointed with some adjustments and adding good blades to this tool is absolutely amazing. I've done several projects by now and they have come out lovely, I can finally do art with wood!!! |
